The ‘Special Edition’ piece of this LP is the extra four tracks that have been added on to a digital-only EP release from late last year. So, that’s the complicated bit out of the way, and we can now talk about the actual music. Slakah The Beatchild is a young Canadian producer / performer of soulful jazz-tipped hip hop, presenting us with a mixture of instrumental and vocal tracks reminiscent of Dilla, but different enough to make the music his own. The instrumentals are perfect as they are, including the opening number, ‘When The Night Stood Still’ which eloquently describes a beautiful star-filled sky on a warm summer’s night. And the vocal tracks blend hip hop sensibilities with extremely accomplished soulful grooves. Contributions from fellow-Canadian, Ebrahim and Swedish soul artist Magnus Tingsek round out some of our favourite songs on the LP, including ‘This Beautiful Feeling’ and ‘War Within’ (the second track on the album to tackle the dark side of drugs). The album definitely benefits from being beefed up with the extra tracks, and will make an ideal accompiament for your late nights and hip dinner parties. ‘Something Forever – Special Edition’ is released on BBE Music on February 28th 2011.
