In the ideal world, this LP would need no promotion at all – the music and artists it features should speak loudly enough for themselves – with names such as J Dilla, King Britt, Pete Rock, will.i.am, Marly Marl, Jazzy Jeff, DJ Spinna and Madlib this is a history lesson in 21st century Hip Hop. This particular record is kind of a ‘best of’ of a series of 9 LPs released by BBE over the last decade that allowed hip hop producers the freedom to ‘do what they wanted’. Compiled by DJ Spinna and Mr Thing, the end result is a very diverse set of 32 tracks, as well as two full mixes (three if you buy the digital version), with artists such as will.i.am letting loose his usually bounded creativity, Jazzy Jeff covering Roy Ayers’ ‘We Live In Philly’ with Jill Scott guesting on vocals, J Dilla getting all Sergio Mendes, and cellist Larry Gold delivering McFadden & Whitehead’s ‘No Stoppin’ with the help of Black Thought. And if that wasn’t enough, accompanying the release there are also a series of Singles Collections, the first one being from Jay Dee (aka J Dilla). Unless you own the original LPs from the series, this really is a must-have record for anyone’s collection. ‘The Beat Generation 10th Anniversary Collection’ is out now on BBE Records.
