Space Invadas – Soul:Fi (BBE)

Sydney-based Space Invadas, aka Katalyst and Steve Spacek, released an EP of 3 tracks and remixes from this album late last year, which we enjoyed enormously. The album arrived at the end of last month in Europe (it was released initially in Australia) and included a further 12 tracks, making this quite a substantial piece of work. The quality of the EP is retained on the album, as is the general style, which is funky hip hop with an RnB vibe, and an emphasis on a strong ‘boom boom boom’ rhythm. The vocals, courtesy of Steve Spacek, are smooth and soulful, and variety is provided by vocalists and musicians such as Dank (of Frank & …), Jade McCrae, Buff 1 and Fantine. The track ‘Ready Or Not’, which features Dank, and is available below for your listening pleasure, epitomises their sound perfectly – cool, upbeat and soulful. The only thing that spoils the record for us are the space-hippy spoken interludes, which come across as neither serious or ironic. Soul:Fi will appeal to funk fans and hip-hop heads alike, and will do a lot to promote this hybrid sound, which is no bad thing in our books. The album is out now on BBE Records.
